From Museums to Mayans: The Best Things to Do in BelizePosted on February 12. 2015
If you think that the majority of the activities in Belize involve frolicking in the sun above the water or exploring wondrous things below the surface, well, you would be absolutely right. Not many places in the world offer quite the range of beauty both above and below the sea as Belize, and most of the best things to do in Belize do involve the water. But not all of them. As you will see in today’s post, Belize is full of surprises sure to make your holiday magical.
Snorkeling and Scuba Diving
This is the one that Belize is world famous for, and you simply must give it a try. Belize’s section of the Great Mayan Reef, which is the largest in the world next to the Great Barrier Reef, is a stunning section full of vivid and bright underwater life just waiting to be explored. Sights like the massive submerged cave called the Great Blue Hole and the over 500 species of fish and other sea life will take your breath away, but luckily your snorkel or tank will replace it for you.
While the nearby Mayan ruins in Mexico and Guatemala may get a little more attention, and thus more visits from fellow travelers, visiting Mayan ruins in Belize feels like being let in on a secret. From coastal treasures to jungle fortresses, the Mayan ruins will captivate you and provide an insight into an ancient culture on a very intimate scale. In fact, many ruins in Belize are still being unearthed to this day, so visitors are free to channel their inner Indiana Jones and set off in search of undiscovered treasures.
Spotting some of the bold and beautiful birds that populate the trees is also one of the best things to do in Belize. Hundreds of different types of birds call this special nation home, and are just waiting for you to spot them. Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and its lagoon are a perfect place to catch an eyeful of colorful birds, but almost anywhere in the country can become a birder’s paradise at a moments notice – just make sure to keep your eyes on the branches above.
Kayaking & Canoeing
Along the coasts and on inland waters, Belize is awash in places to take a leisurely float on still water or a rapid descent down a small stony waterfall. Kayaking and canoeing offer a different perspective on things as they combine the ability to take in the scenery above water and below at the same time. Many of Belize’s most beautiful coral can be viewed from the comfort of your kayak, where your only problem will be figuring out where to gaze next.
In addition to immersing yourself in the blue waters that surround Belize, the nation is home to a diverse range of fascinating cultures perfect for discovering and diving in to. In addition to a rich Mayan heritage, the nation of Belize is home to Garifuna, Creole, and Mestizo peoples who have influenced the nation with their traditions, food and drink. Learning about and meeting their cultures in person through visiting the Museum of Belize or a homestyle meal is one of the most enlightening things you can do on your vacation.
